I listened to many performances of the Bach Cello Suites before deciding that, all in all, this one by Heinrich Schiff is more or less the best modern recording. Those other performances include Ma, Rostropovich, and Starker. (Casals is in another class altogether--like Schnabel's Beethoven--the best performance but in historical recording.)4/4(14).

Schiff's performances of the cello suites however achieve an almost miraculous vitality. The music is conceived true to its sources - as a series of dances and laments, a folk-based approach. I cannot enthuse too much about this recording - this is the one!/5(28).

In Bach's Cello Suites, as the fay and fragile Yo-Yo Ma recordings make clear, it was a terminal mistake. Not so in Schiff 's magnificently muscular recordings of the suites: Schiff 's rhythms, his tempos, his tone, his intonation, and especially his interpretations were anything but fay or fragile.

Heinrich Schiff’s set of the unaccompanied Bach Cello Suites is digitally recorded with the utmost naturalness, the cello timbre warm and beautifully focused. So, too, are the performances, which are splendidly paced; Bach’s linear flow is effortlessly phrased and moves forward with fine spontaneity.

Bach's fifth cello suite, in C minor, continues the experiments with texture, style, and counterpoint undertaken in the first four works in the set of stonescarkagataursharphammer.xyzinfo calls for the top string of the cello to be played scordatura, in this case tuned down from A to G. This affects the sonority of the open string and the overtones produced when played with other strings, creating a distinctive effect.

Bach turns the idea of a ‘Sarabande’ dance on its head in the peaceful second movement, altering the rhythms so the beats are stressed in what sounds like the wrong place. Suite No. 5 in C minor This suite was originally written for a cello with its strings tuned down a tone, to extend the possibilities of the instrument even further.
